Subvención Global ID #124
Objetivo del Proyecto:
To provide the Colposcopy Clinic at Dr. Miguel Silva General Hospital with a DEKA Smartxide MLT Gynecological CO2 Laser, which will treat approximately 500 women per year from the 113 municipalities of the state of Michoacán for intraepithelial lesions that are precursors to invasive cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancer in women who are carriers of the human papillomavirus. This is a "Humanitarian" project in the area of disease prevention and treatment.

Evaluación de Necesidades:
Nationwide, there is an early detection program that includes cytology and HPV testing at the primary care level. Patients with positive results are referred to colposcopy clinics, where the diagnosis is confirmed and the necessary treatment is administered to prevent progression to invasive cancer, or the cancer is treated at cancer centers.
As a Rotary Club, this is an issue that has alarmed us. We have been working to support early detection, conducting campaigns in the communities surrounding Morelia: El Páramo, El Correo, Acuitzio del Canje, Tzio, Paso Ancho, La Angostura, Copuyo, and Queretanillo. We bring the gynecologist and the necessary equipment to perform tests. We deliver the results and refer the women who need them.
There are different methods for treating the disease, but without a doubt, using a gynecological CO2 surgical laser is a less invasive and more effective treatment. It is a fundamental tool for treating intraepithelial lesions that are precursors to cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancer in women who are carriers of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). With this equipment, the disease can be treated quickly, resulting in shorter and more accessible treatments in terms of both time and the number of sessions required for success.
The Colposcopy Clinic at Dr. Miguel Silva General Hospital, located in Morelia, Michoacán, treats an average of 2,000 patients annually, of whom approximately 500 require some type of treatment. Timely and appropriate management significantly reduces the progression of lesions and mortality from gynecological cancer, and it costs the hospital less than treating cancer in just one woman.
For these reasons, the colposcopy doctors and Dr. Abraham Flores Vargas, Director of the Dr. Miguel Silva General Hospital, approached our Rotary Club to request this equipment.
Providing this equipment offers patients several benefits: a minimally invasive, outpatient treatment that doesn't require hospitalization, allowing them to continue their daily lives with less discomfort and reducing their risk of cancer. It only requires local anesthesia.

Diseño del Proyecto:
The Rotary Club of Morelia Tres Marías will be responsible for the purchase, delivery, and installation of the equipment in the specially designed facilities at the Colposcopy Clinic of Dr. Miguel Silva General Hospital. It will oversee the training of the medical staff responsible for its use. This training will be provided by the equipment supplier and is included in the cost of the equipment.
Beneficiarios:
DEKA Smartxide MLT Gynecological CO2 Laser, will treat approximately 500 women per year from the 113 municipalities of the state of Michoacán for intraepithelial lesions that are precursors to invasive cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancer in women who are carriers of the human papilloma virus. It will be an importante tool for the gynecologists; this laser gives them the opportunity to treat patients in a more effective way.
Sostenibilidad:
To maintain the expected results, the Rotary Club will acquire the laser from a local seller that offers maintenance and replacement of parts. The laser will be donated to the hospital, but the Rotary Club will do a monthly evaluation of the use of the laser during the first year, and thereafter spacing out the evaluations.
Colaboradores:

Monitoreo y Evaluación:
One of our Rotary Club members is a gynecologist at the Colposcopy Clinic at Dr. Miguel Silva General Hospital. She will be the Rotary member in charge of monitoring and evaluating the use of the laser. The laser will be used on at least 500 women each year. This is the amount of women currently being treated at the clinic. We foresee that this number could increase due to the fact that other clinics will refer patients who will benefit from the use of this equipment for their treatment.
In the state, there are eight public health service colposcopy clinics that lack gynecological CO2 laser equipment. Since all the clinics are part of the same health system, they will all be notified if one of them acquires the equipment. Therefore, the clinics will be able to refer their patients requiring treatment with this equipment to the colposcopy clinic at Dr. Miguel Silva General Hospital. This will result in the clinic having even more benefactors.
