Subvención Global ID #149
Objetivo del Proyecto:
The purpose of the first Global Grant was to provide initial funding (seed funding) for a cardiovascular disease prevention and intervention program implemented through a strategic partnership between the University Hospital, the NGO Latidos por México, and Rotary. The Global Grant funds were used to purchase angioplasty kits for catheterization procedures, allowing for the placement of stents in low-income patients suffering from life-threatening cardiovascular conditions.
Both the University Hospital and Latidos por México made substantial in-kind contributions to the project by providing hospital infrastructure, specialized medical personnel to perform the procedures, and comprehensive post-procedure follow-up care at no cost to the beneficiaries. Each angioplasty kit consisted of 16 medical supplies and was procured at a reduced cost of 37,000 Mexican pesos, ensuring the efficient and responsible use of grant funds.
Through effective project implementation and financial stewardship, the project exceeded its original target of 62 beneficiaries and successfully provided interventions to more than 70 patients. This increased reach was achieved because not all patients required the full angioplasty kit. In some cases, medical evaluation determined that the most appropriate course of treatment involved continued medication, monitoring, or referral for surgical intervention. The funds not utilized in these cases were strategically reallocated to support additional patients requiring catheterization procedures, thereby expanding the overall project impact.
During project implementation, a significant gap in patient knowledge was identified regarding access to timely cardiovascular care and preventive practices. As awareness activities expanded, more families sought assistance through the program. Patients demonstrated strong engagement and interest in understanding their condition and adopting preventive behaviors. In response, the collaborating organization, Latidos por México, conducted a community-based diagnostic and prevention campaign open to the general population. This campaign included free medical screenings, educational sessions focused on cardiovascular health and disease prevention, and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training aimed at reducing the risk of fatal cardiac events.
These education and prevention efforts have been further reinforced through ongoing social media awareness campaigns led by the collaborating organization, with the support of the State Government.
An important success identified during the implementation of the project was the active participation of cardiology residents from the University Hospital. These residents received continuous training and mentorship from faculty specializing in interventional cardiology who performed the procedures. This model strengthened local medical capacity, supported professional development, and contributed to the long-term sustainability of cardiovascular care services by expanding the hospital’s ability to serve a larger vulnerable population.
In this second Global Grant, the training of cardiology residents will be continued and further strengthened. This ongoing capacity-building component is considered a key element of sustainability, as it ensures the transfer of knowledge and skills to future medical professionals, increases local expertise, and enables the program to maintain and expand its impact beyond the grant period.
Following the successful intervention of more than 70 patients and in alignment with the objectives outlined in the initial phase of the project, additional stakeholders from civil society have joined the initiative to expand coverage and ensure sustainability. These partners include private foundations as well as the State Government, through the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Inclusion.
The project’s overarching goal—to establish and operate a sustainable care platform that integrates prevention, medical intervention, and ongoing support for economically vulnerable adults with life-threatening cardiovascular conditions—is now fully operational. Through this second Global Grant, the objective is to strengthen this platform and provide lifesaving care to at least 39 additional patients and their families.
In this second phase, the collaborating organization commits to continuing the dissemination of information on cardiovascular disease prevention and access to care. Its medical team will carry out the required interventions, while the University Hospital will continue to contribute its installed capacity, medical expertise, and social work services as in-kind support.

Interviews and meetings were held with the leaders of the cardiology department of the University Hospital, medical leaders (interventional cardiologists) of the organization Latidos por México, local cardiologists from other health institutions, as well as social workers and other humanitarian assistance organizations who face every day the low income population needs to receive timely care to treat their heart condition and do not have alternatives to offer treatment to patients and their families.
Additionally, cardiology patients and their families were also interviewed in order to learn about the obstacles they face in receiving timely care.
